Learn how to maximize training gains with Tudor O. Bompa, the pioneer of periodization training, and Carlo A. Buzzichelli, one of the world’s foremost experts on training methods, in the sixth edition of Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training. Guided by the authors’ expertise, the sixth edition offers information central to understanding the latest research and practices related to training theory while providing scientific support for the fundamental principles of periodization.

The sixth edition of this definitive text presents a comprehensive discussion of periodization based on the philosophy of Tudor Bompa. It features the following:

• A review of the history, terms, and theories related to periodization

• Discussion of the importance of designing a sport-specific and competition-level annual plan and discarding any one-size-fits-all approach

• An expanded chapter on the integration of biomotor abilities within the training process

• Comprehensive updates to the information on training sessions, microcycles, and macrocycles

• An expanded chapter on the methods for developing muscle strength, including manipulation of loading variables and the conversion to specific strength

• A more detailed explanation of speed and agility training, differentiating between individual and team sports

In addition to applying periodization models to resistance training, Periodization also discusses sport-specific endurance. You’ll be introduced to different methods of testing and developing endurance, including the physiological basis for each method.

Instructors will also find a newly added image bank, allowing access to tables and figures in the text for use when creating lecture materials.

This is an awesome text for those seeking higher level training knowledge. Don’t purchase this book expecting to get a workout laid out for you (bench on this day, squats on that day, etc.) Bompa and Haff dedicate this text to explaining the whats and whys of periodization in training schedules. It is an advanced text for those with a good understanding of exercise physiology. If you’re looking for ways to schedule your training so you can continue to progress over months and years, this book is for you!

This book is very detailed and extensive in all aspects of its teaching. The system of periodization is not something that can be simplified into a five page report or a skinny book. Tudor Bompa gives me the chance to apply the principles of periodization through all my athletic endeavors and helps me understand how to optimize my body’s performance. As a weight-lifting enthusiast I would recommend this book not only to anyone who lifts weights, but also to anyone who wants to max out their potential in a field of physical action, from ice skating to soccer to football.

I would safely say this is the Gold Standard of information when it comes to periodization. Very in depth and everything is broken down – the fundamentals are taught first so that everything makes sense when it’s put together later on.
Periodization in general should be the very base of all training programs, for yourself and clients alike, to ensure that progress is being made in a MEASURABLE and PREDICTABLE manner.
All in all, periodization is a fundamental concept for both athletes and trainers/coaches alike and this book is, in my opinion, THE starting point for learning it.

In the world of sport Tudor Bomba’s name does not need advertising. This book covers the fundamentals of the theory and methods of sports training. No matter what sport you are coaching in THIS is the sport textbook. Not only you have the concepts of planning the development of your physical abilities but you have sport specific examples and programs. A must have, I highly recommend this textbook.

This book is really complete, not just about periodization, but about everything you need to know before learning about this topic. It covers periodization in details, in a comprehensive way, with great examples, so you can use it as a reference for everyday practice. It has a lot of scientific references at the end, so you can check the evidence and value of the information, and you can apply it to almost every kind of sport you work with. It is useful to help with general population periodization too, so the book is friendly to coaches that work with non-athletic populations. No doubt, this is one of the “MUST HAVE” books in the library of every strength and conditioning coach.

After 3-4 hours of reading and taking notes. This means “dog ear pages”/ red pen important paragraphs.
If only 10% of this book applies to you….WELL WORTH THE BUCK.
