There is a difference between Exercise and Training. Exercise is physical activity for its own sake, a workout done for the effect it produces today, during the workout or right after you’re through. Training is physical activity done with a longer-term goal in mind, the constituent workouts of which are specifically designed to produce that goal. Training is how athletes prepare to win, and how all motivated people approach physical preparation.

Practical Programming for Strength Training 3rd Edition addresses the topic of Training. It details the mechanics of the process, from the basic physiology of adaptation to the specific programs that apply these principles to novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters.

This book will tell you all you need to know about what to life and why. If you are stuck, not making gains, or just curious about how to improve, then this is the book for you. It explains what lifts to do, how many sets and reps, and the course of your progress. It will explain why and what to do when you get 'stuck'. It's been invaluable to me. Buy it!

This book explains why The Starting Strength method as outlined in "Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, 3rd edition" works the way it does. It explains the stress - recovery - adaptation cycle you will go through every 48-72 hours as a novice, and beyond.

It also gives plenty of intermediate/advanced ideas and example programs/templates, but most importantly, it will give you the tools you need to craft your own programming for yourself, or if you are a coach, for your clients.
